Wednesday Wisdom: The Art of Savoring — Why Lingering on Good Moments May Lift Your Mood

Think about the last truly good moment you had. Maybe it was the first sip of a warm drink, a friend’s laugh or late-afternoon light across the kitchen. Now ask yourself honestly how long you stayed with it. For most of us the answer is “about two seconds” before our minds jump to the next thing. Psychologists have a name for the skill of lingering a little longer: savoring. Research suggests it may be one of the gentlest ways to get more from the good moments you already have. 🌿

What Is Savoring?

Savoring is the practice of noticing, appreciating and stretching out a positive experience. Researchers Fred Bryant and Joseph Veroff, who did much of the early work on the idea, describe three directions. You can savor the past by reminiscing, the present by being fully in the moment, and the future by enjoying anticipation. It isn’t about forcing happiness. It’s about not rushing past the good parts.

What the Research Suggests

In a month-long daily diary study, Paul Jose, Bee Teng Lim and Fred Bryant found that on days when people savored their good experiences more, they also tended to report a happier mood. Savoring seemed to help explain why positive events lifted people’s spirits. It was the noticing, not just the event itself.

A 2010 study by Jordi Quoidbach and colleagues compared different ways people respond to good news. Being present in the moment and sharing or celebrating good things with others were linked with greater happiness. “Dampening” habits went the other way. These include finding a flaw in the moment or telling yourself it won’t last.

Not every finding is dramatic. In a small study of university students, Hurley and Kwon found that a savoring program was linked to fewer depressive symptoms and less negative mood. It didn’t measurably boost positive mood, though. That’s an honest reminder that savoring is a gentle support, not a magic switch.

4 Simple Ways to Savor Today

  1. Take a 20-second pause. When something feels good, stop and silently name it. “This tea is warm. The sun feels lovely.” Then take one slow breath before moving on.
  2. Use one more sense. Notice the smell, sound or texture as well as what you see. If you’ve tried slowing down your first bite, you already know how much this changes an ordinary meal.
  3. Share it. Tell someone about a small win or a lovely moment. Saying it out loud helps it stick.
  4. Look forward on purpose. Pick one thing you’re looking forward to this week, like a call, a walk or a cozy evening, and spend a minute imagining it.

Savoring pairs beautifully with an awe walk. As the days get shorter, it can also be one more small tool alongside the ideas in our guide to lifting your mood when the days get short.

Today’s Wisdom ✨

The busy season is on its way, and good moments can blur together. You don’t need more of them to feel better. Try staying with the ones you already have just a little longer. Today, choose one ordinary pleasure and give it your full attention for 20 seconds.
